The first generation (the first set of equipment for the U.S. Army in 1971) – ruby laser rangefinder (694nm)

Second generation (1977 to present) – Nd:YAG laser rangefinder (1064nm)

Third generation human eye safe wavelength laser rangefinder (10.6μm, 1.54μm, 1.57μm)
